According to the latest news, the first edition of the UL2263 standard for electric vehicle cables will be released in the United States on May 9, 2022. So how is it different from the UL62 standard?
Interpretation of UL2263 standard:
UL2263 mainly has 6 models, which are divided into three categories: EVJ EV; EVJE EVE; EVJT EVT
Category 1: Thermoset insulation type EVJ, EV
The rated voltage of EVJ type is 300 V, and the insulating materials used are mainly thermosetting materials (such as EP, CR, CSM, CPE, etc.). Contains 2 to 6 18-12 AWG thermoset insulated circuit conductors and may use one or more insulated ground conductors. The cable may contain mixed data, signal, communication and/or fiber optic cables of any AWG size.
The EV type is rated at 1000 V, and the insulating materials used are mainly thermosetting materials (such as EP, CR, CSM, CPE, etc.). Contains two or more 18 AWG to 500 kcmil thermally insulated circuit conductors and may employ one or more insulated ground conductors. The cable may contain mixed data, signal, communication and/or fiber optic cables of any AWG size.
Class II: Thermoplastic Elastomer Insulation Type EVJE, EVE
The rated voltage of EVJE type is 300 V, and the insulating material used is mainly thermoplastic elastomer material (such as TPE, etc.), which is the same as EVJ type, but the cable adopts thermoplastic elastomer insulated conductor and sheath. Model EVJE 300V power supply wire diameter is 18-12 AWG.
EVE type - rated voltage of 1000 V, the same as EV type, but the cable adopts thermoplastic elastomer insulated wire (such as TPE, etc.), and the power supply wire diameter is 18-500 kcmil.
Category 3: Thermoplastic insulation type EVJT, EVT
Model EVJT—Rated to 300 V, the same as Model EVJ, but the cable uses thermoplastic (eg, PVC) insulated conductors with a power supply wire diameter of 18-12 AWG.
EVT type - rated voltage of 1000 V, same as EV type, but the cable is thermoplastic material (polyvinyl chloride) and the supply wire diameter is 18-500 kcmil.
Interpretation of UL2263 Standard Characteristics
Voltage
This standard specifies the requirements for electric vehicle cables with a rated voltage of 1000V AC and DC. The voltage of UL2263 is up to 1000V AC or DC, and there are mainly three voltage levels of 300V, 600V and 1000V.
temperature
Rated at 60°C, 75°C, 90°C or 105°C
UL2263 temperature is divided into four grades: 60 °C, 75 °C, 90 °C, 105 °C. Compared with the European standard EN50620 and the national standard GB/T33594, the maximum temperature resistance is 90 degrees, so the temperature of the American UL standard is much higher.
conductor
Wires shall be annealed copper per ASTM B3 or NMX-J-036-ANCE, or annealed coated copper per ASTM B33 or NMX-J-008-ANCE. The conductors are mainly soft copper or electroplated soft copper, and metal conductors such as alloy copper and aluminum alloy cannot be selected.
wire diameter
Electric vehicle cables use flexible stranded copper conductors, ranging in size from 18 AWG to 500 kcmil Main power supply wire diameter: from 18 AWG (0.824mm²) to 500 kcmil (253mm²), signal transmission and control cables are not subject to this constraint.
Insulation and Sheathing Materials
Insulation and sheathing are thermosets for EVJ and EV types, thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) for EVJE and EVE types, and thermoplastic (polyvinyl chloride) for EVJT and EVT types.
